Bug Description

This problem still exists in Edgy BETA!

DAO burning doesn't work either; it'll instead use SAO. Below is the debug output from k3b using SAO:

it may have something to do with the automounting process.
i was once able to burn just fine using nerolinux, but then i noticed that my automounting wasn't working. i followed this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=184786 to enable automounting but then i couldn't burn again.

i am now using brasero to burn cds and dvds and, so far, it's working great. however, it still doesn't have all the cdrecord/k3b features...

Same issue. There seems to be two /dev entries for one physical device. I also observe the same 'drive returns wrong startsec error'. In the interests of saving space I have included the debugging output from k3b as an attachment. It means little to me but might help someone fix this bug

Richard Birnie (rbirnie-deactivatedaccount) wrote : Re: SATA drive won't burn CD or DVD (work around)

Work around.

If anyone is still having issues with this I've found an alternative solution. There is another CD burning app called brasero (also known as Bonfire) which works just fine for me. My system config is in the previous post. The application is available from the ubuntu repositories, it uses libburn as a backend instead of cdrecord which I think may be the source of this bug.

I installed the packages 'brasero' and 'libburn2' through adept and it just works. So far I've burned a collection of assorted data files and an install/liveCD and both have worked fine. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of documentation but the app is so straightforward it's self explanatory once you open it. The only thing that doesn't work for me is multisession but I'm led to believe it's in the pipeline for a future release.

John,
unfortunately, this didn't do it. I enabled the address translation and did everything else this guide suggested. I can, however, burn using Brasero (which in turn uses the libburn2 library), so I guess this might have something to do with cdrskin.

It turned out data cds with k3b didn't work for me either. I disabled the on th fly option. Everything seemed to work and said it was successful, but I can't read the disc. The disc is not exactly blank anymore just messed up. I tested it originally by making an audio cd. Adding cdrskin in place of cdrecord just caused k3b to burn audio cds with cdrdao instead of cdrskin, which apparently works fine for me. I should have been more observant. Brasero works for me also.

I got k3b to run with libburn (this time I'm absolutely sure). I downloaded the latest (0.3.4) libburn from http://libburnia.pykix.org/. I compiled it and installed in /usr/local/. I had to do "sudo chown root:cdrom /dev/sg1" to let me make a cd without being root. I tested cdrskin by running "cdrskin k3b_image.iso /dev/scd0" that worked. I added /usr/local/bin/cdrskin to the search path in k3b, and restarted k3b. I set cdrskin to be the default for cdrecord. Then I tried to burn a data cd. It didn't work at first, but I disabled overburn and write on the fly. Then it worked. I enabled on the fly, and it still worked.

I'm not quite sure why it didn't work at first, but it works now.

Don't known if I should be presenting this here.

Burning a CD:
Being new to Linux and Unix and having installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn ) a month ago, I don't known if any of this information is useful. Prior to this installation, both devices worked with Windows (don't want to use) and Fedora 6 (problems).
When I try to burn a CD with C/D / DVD creator, the following messages appeared:
(1) Reload a rewritable or blank disk (it can read size of file) and (2) writing files to disk.
When I right click on CD-RW/DVD RW Drive:
This message appears: Cannot mount volume. Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume 'UDF Volume'.
Also, when I try to mount the floppy, this message appears; cannot mount volume. mount: /dev/fdo is not a valid block device.

Both of these devices can read a disk.
Below are commands I ran after looking a bug reports #62986,#66254,#44233 and #6415.
