Might as well sync from 2.4.2-1 (to be uploaded tonight to Unstable). As upstream reports in his announcement to maintainers:

"Hi everybody,

I just released CUPS-PDF v2.4.2. This is merely a maintenance release with several code cleanups (some more than 200 warnings issued by splint were covered) and minor code/security optimizations. No new features were added.

Cheers,
Volker"

Debian change log to follow in a few hours, once 2.4.2-1 is in Unstable.

   * New upstream maintenance release:
     - Removed extraneous COPYRIGHT files (make Lintian happy).
     - Cleaned up over 200 warnings issued by 'splint'.
     - Renamed PPD v4 to match the single PPD file from the 1.7 codebase.
     - Removed PPD v3.
     - Shipped the PPD uncompressed.
   * Migrated PPD to /usr/share/ppd/cups-pdf directory (Closes: #390141).

Oops! Mistakenly skipped one 2.4.2-1 change log line, while pasting:

* Added missing invoke-rc.d reload loop in postrm.
Thanks to Roger Leigh for spotting this.

2.4.2-1 would need an approved UF exception [0].

Since this will require an UVF, here's the diffstat. Lots of changes, since upstream did a code cleanup, but otherwise still the good old 2.4.1 codebase.

That's not a new Upstream version, "just" a new Debian revision, no objections - please go ahead.

Oops - didn't look properly.

The changes look small and focussed enough, I'm ok with it. Reinhard, Sebastian, Andrew?

This fix needs to be backported to all Ubuntu releases that use a CUPS 1.2 (or any of the 1.99 release candidates).

It might also be useful on earlier Ubuntu releases that use CUPS 1.1.23 with a low-privilege user, but this is untested.

Superseded by Malone bug 87595, which requests release for Dapper, Edgy and Feisty, with a slightly newer version that further tightens the back-end permissions.
