Bug Description

Binary package hint: dpkg

Attached is a screenshot of Synaptic at this dpkg hang: Upon upgrading the packages, as soon as Synaptic/APT/dpkg starts unpacking the .deb archives, dpkg hangs, WITHOUT CONSUMING ANY CPU!!! This is definitely something an infinite loop would do.

This is a dpkg bug, not an APT bug.

As an update to what C-de-Avillez posted on the bug marked as a duplicate of this one, as you can see in the screenshot, it's every time I try to upgrade my packages that this occurs. I don't know if it's just me or if there actually are others who have this problem.

Hi ks64.

This sounds like a wait/hang, *not* as a loop.

Anyway, I would like you to attach here the file /var/log/apt/term.log -- this may give us a bit more of data on what happened when you forcefully cancelled the initial upgrade.

Changed in dpkg (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

I was getting this on my amd64 server until recently - however I always use 'apt-get update; apt-get -y dist-upgrade'.

I have been putting off doing any upgrades to avoid any more lock-ups, but have just successfully performed one, so it might have cleared?

Hi,
I have the same problem since I've upgraded to Maverick. (Linux 2.6.35-22)
The upgrades don't work anymore after the machine has been up for some time, so I can upgrade when I've just powered my laptop on. If I run other applications, do my stuff for a few hours, any upgrade with apt and dpkg will hang while unpacking.
When this occurs, the dpkg process hangs in an uninterruptible state in the iterate_supers channel.
At this point, it is impossible to reboot the machine unless you make a hard reboot.
