Bug Description

When a member posts a comment on a bug, the lp mail uses the user's main contact id as the "From" address for the bug mail.

However this does not happen for all members , this only happens to those who have unchecked the "Hide my email addresses from other Launchpad users" , making their email address public.

If the member's id is private , then the bug mail "From" addy is <email address hidden> .

This seems to be an issue when someone has set their spam rule to " Message goes to spam if sender is not in address book. "

Recently when a bug reporter was wondering why he did not receive the comment requesting info from a bug triager due to such strict spam rule.

The following was the request from the reporter:
" <intrader> there should be a way for contributors to send message on behalf of launchpad, and then I would only have to have launchpad in address book "
Seems like a reasonable request, and we can probably expect more users with such strict spam rules.

Is there a reason why we send bug mails with the commenter's real id? Could all mails be sent using the same <email address hidden> ?

Reply-to is the same in both cases though: <email address hidden>

I can confirm this issue. Also, if the user hits reply without checking, the reply email will be sent to the user who triaged the bug instead of to the Launchpad bug. This results in the triager having to manually add the comments from the reporter to the actual bug report.

This is already being tracked in bug 31586, where there has been some lively discussions about solving the problem. We hope to be able to tackle this shortly.
