Bug Description

Breezy just installed. Asus P5S800-VM m/b celeron 2.8.
Printer Brother 1430 on USB. HPijs driver (I think) is the only driver that works.

Setting the print mode to landscape rather than the normal portrait does not print landscape - it prints as usual. The same happens on abiword, which obviously uses the same bit of programming.

Using openoffice word, and setting the paper horizontal first, a landscape print is no problem. Obviously it uses its own printer output.

More works on Breezy than I have seen on any OS (personal award)

Thanks for your bug report. As you noted: it's a problem of other packages as well and was already reported in the upstream bug tracker as http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=323263

Sorry it was not new - I'm smart enough to report it, but not smart
enough to do a detailed upstream check. I just looked through the
last fifty or so bug reports. Could I suggest that for clods like me,
who last programmed with turbo pascal and assembler, a 'top twenty'
ubuntu bugs would cut your keyboard work down a bit.

Bugs fixed since your live CD gnome 2.12 distro on 'Linux format'
(UK} include all four drivers for the Brother 1430. The printer will
now spit out a blank sheet on three, but CUPS works on the fourth,
and not even Knoppix does that. The printed output from abiword was
rough on the 2.12, but the kerning etc is adobe-standard now.

I await 'thumper theo' or whatever your next instalment is
christened, with interest. No need to acknowledge!

To jog my own memory, my password with the login is ge ...... at
in case something obscure crops up in future.

I almost re-filed this bug under abiword just now. It's also in the ubuntu bugzilla several times (#18657 is still open).

People with problems with abiword, gnumeric, evolution, planner, etc. will search for this bug and not find it. Is there an appropriate way to make it so people searching for bugs in those programs will be able to find it?

The bug was originally filed as Debian #195600 which is now marked as fixed in gnumeric (1.5.3-1). I'm not sure how they achieved that, unless they switched gnumeric to make use of libgnomeprint in a different manner.

* The following issues have been fixed upstream:
     * Page settings, including paper orientation, are now restored properly on
       load. (Closes: #195600, #236024)

A quick scan of the debian bugtracker for libgnomeprint, gnumeric, gedit and abiword doesn't turn up this bug today.

Debian #195600 is totally unrelated and is not about printing itself, but about retaining printing options through save/reload.

However, Ubuntu #24785 is the same bug, with its own set of duplicates. Personally, I think that if Dapper is to be that Totally Cool Release supported for at least three years, you can't have lightning fast gnome programs (like gnumeric, I really love it) that aren't able to print landscape! Printing in PDF messes everything up quite nicely, and selecting a 90 degrees rotated feed makes previews and PS outputs look ok, but fails to actually print landscape (because of the wrong feed orientation). I realize that fixing bugs isn't easy and I'm not good at it myself, hence my reports instead of fixes, sorry! Still, I urge you to look into this matter. Thanks!

I forgot, upstream bug #115476 (as set for this bug) is not related to this bug (except, apparently, comment #13 _only_). I believe upstream #334719 is exactly the same bug, and that comment #1 on that bug is incorrect.

I agree, I marked this bug and all of it's duplicates a duplicate of 24785 and updated the upstream link there. Thank you for pointing that out!
