Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

System installed from Live CD 10.04TLS disk providede on Linux Magazine. The disk had to be formated with the partions aligned with the cylinders before the installation would perform correctly on an old AMD witha small memory. Error reported as out of disk by Grab2.

All Kernals since 2.6.32-22 fail to install correctly or boot. The previously installed 2.6.32-21-generic as installed by the Live CD can be booted from the command line but the others all fail. I have failed to work out how to get it to boot any other way.

From reading the bug list this is not a new bug just another variation on the list of problems. I did not see any error messages but like many others I did not look for errors.

If I can help by follwoing instructions in the next few days please email me.

I have been successful in bypassing this problem by reinstalling 10.04 from the live CD and using the Ext3 file system. Thus I get ERROR: Out of disk but the computer proceeds to boot and updated kernels have not caused the system to stop working.

The previous installation had been with Ext4 with the partition aligned to the cylinders as this allowed the installation to proceed successfully. However I guess the problem was something to do with Ext4 and updates not being aligned correctly at a very low level.

I hope this information helps.

Frank - I have tried this, and I thank you for pointing me to this on the Ubuntu Uk podcast, but it would not work for me. I still can only boot by hitting the "reset" button on my pc box at the Grub2 error. - James

I'm sorry there are clearly two or more problems happening here. If you have
also tried the "standard" method of editing the Grub2 config file which is
well documented on a number of other bugs I'm sorry but I don't have any
suggestions, I don’t “know” any of the software around this problem.

There are at lease three things that can go wrong here;

a.. Grub2 can fail to do it's job properly
b.. The file system can fail in some way
c.. The early parts of the Kernel Loading process can go wrong

In my case it was clearly the file system that caused the problem and is
still causing small problems, in that I get an error on every boot but it
still works.

The more common problem appears to be something going wrong with the Grub2
start-up.

I have seen nothing to suggest the third possibility but!!!!!!

And there might be others I cannot think of.

I should also say for completeness that the problem can also just be two of
the parts not being of the right version.

Good Luck

Frank
