Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose
VBoxManage createhd --filename ubuntu --size 8000 --variant Fixed
Running this command makes it hang at 0% and it fails completely, but gives no output other than 0%
strace attached, gdb wouldn't work

Thanks to one of the vbox guys, it happens because the vdi are stored in the home folder, on my machine it is encrypted.
If the vdi is created in /tmp/ and then moved to ~/.Virtualbox/
