How is it's importance wishlist if you can't download torrents that use OBT and PBT from transmission?

I'd like to see confirmation of this. both obt and pbt run the opentracker software. I've spoken to its author who confirmed that it supports http. When I asked him about this ticket he said they might have switched off http temporarily due to overload, but "it's not a design goal."

Charles, if you look at http://openbittorrent.com/ or http://publicbt.com/ there reads:

"How does it work?
When you create a torrent file the application will ask you for a tracker address, then simply type in OpenBitTorrents tracker URL:

udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce"

And:

"How does it work?
When you create a torrent file the application will ask you for a tracker address, then simply type in PublicBitTorrents tracker URL's:

udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce"

No mention about http:// tracker.

If you try to use OpenBT or PublicBT (old) http:// tracker it gives error message about tracker not found or can't connect or something.

I'm able to announce to OBT and PBT via http.

The reason I've been reluctant to implement UDP tracker support is that the person who wrote that feature in opentracker has said that the current UDP tracker protocol will be replaced with a new secure version that they're working on.

I agree that this missing feature is escalated now that OBT and PBT are more actively encouraging the use of the udp protocol, though.

Well as I said in comment #4 the general feeling is that the current spec is still lacking.

However, openbittorrent.com is now UDP-only, which raises the priority of this ticket, regardless of the holes in the current spec. For example iirc this is causing trouble for the Linux Mint torrents, which was using the http announce URL for openbittorrent.com in its Mint iso torrent files.

UDP tracker support has been committed to Transmission's repo, and it will be in the next release (2.30).

Transmission 2.76 in Ubuntu 12.04 will not connect to UDP trackers, only HTTP.

Error message: "Could not connect to tracker."

Magnet links from TPB do not magnetize. I always need to add more (HTTP) trackers manually.
