package alsa-utils (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I got a failure message while upgrading alsa-utils from update-manager.

Running the script by hand shows:

There is an apparently incorrect use of $1 in the line that generates the /proc path.
