Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Hy!

I had some simlar issue on lucid, but after I installed maverick, the issue gone away until now :(

When the screensaver activates, sometimes compiz crashes, and metacity starts as a fallback, with a sad side effect: all of my open windows moved to the first desktop (I usually use 8 desktops with 3-4 windows on each)

Maybe the bug is fixed for maverick. Anyway i can not reproduce it in maverick, it would be helpful if you could record a video of the process or at least try to determinate the conditions that made it crash, without more information we can not do much more. I mark it as incomplete.
Anyway thank you for taking the time to request this package and helping to make Ubuntu better

Hy!

It happens usually after at least 4-5 hours of running, and it seems that it
comes up more likely if I run my catalyst development server that generates
a bit more load...

I use the blank screensaver, so it's can't be the problem.

I tryed to enable crash dumping in compiz crash handler plugin, but it only
tells me that there is no debug headers installed, and I can't find a dbg
package for compiz :( No any additional info if I run compiz in a terminal
and the crash happens... Any way to obtain crash info?

If it happened once, I restart compiz, then screensaver activates again, it
crashes again at unlock nearly all the time.

I'l make a video next time it crashes... but I can describe what happens at
unlock:
Normally: I enter my passwrd , the password dialog and the black background
disappears and my backgound image shows, then in a blink, my windows, panel
and docky appears...
Abnormally: naturally the same until the blink, then all window form all
desktops are visible with metacity running, panel is ok, and docky has a
black background as there isn't compositing...

Additionally I'l try to monitor when compiz disappears from the process list
from another computer trough ssh. Because I don't know if it only crashes
after unlock, or while the screensaver active...

Hy!

Here is the video you've asked for!
Sorry because the quality but I wasn't home and that's all my phone's camera
can offer to us :)
What can we see there:
I noticed that my compiz crashed, restarted it and started to record the
video...
I lock the screen with Ctrl+Alt+L
Then enter my password, and..... compiz crashes :( --again (notice that
docky get's the black bar that wasn't there before the screen lock...)
I restart compiz and everything's fine again (Except that all of my windows
cam to desktop #1)
--- the video ends here
I tryed to lock, and unlock again, and again, but the bug don't come up
again, so I cut down the end of the video, because nothing interesting
happens there...

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Well, I enabled apport, but when compiz crashes if does nothing... (works for other apps)
Additionally I tried to run compiz in a terminal with gdb, but there are no debug simbols for config :(

So please help me how can I debug this problem!! I disturbs my work many times a day :(

Thanks!

This bug also occurs for me, with Nvidia graphics (260.19.06) and Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. It's the same as described above - it only occurs after a few hours of running.

Honestly due to some mistakes in the lucid and maverick packaging the only easy way to debug this is to use natty. Otherwise you'll need to install debug symbols for compiz, ssh in from another computer and attach gdb to the currently running compiz process, and when it crashes type 'bt full' and copy/paste the output manually.

I can't see the point why I need ssh, I can run gdb in screen, or tty1 and get the backtrace when it crashes... but how I can install the needed debug symbols? There is no dbg package for compiz :(

That will allow you to install debug packages for virtually any package
in Ubuntu.

Hy!

Here is the backtrace, but that's not too much information because it's
crashes inside libnvidia-glcore...
What can I do now? Will continue with the valgrind part of the linked page
:)

Unfortunately the backtrace and valgrind log show just what you said, this is a crash in the nvidia driver. There is nothing we can do about that.

affects: compiz (Ubuntu) → nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)

Travis, thank's for helping me find the root of the problem!
Now I installed the nvidia-current package from natty, and it seems much more stable!

So anyway I'l make it invalid, because the bug isn't in compiz..
