Bug Description

.... Segmentation fault when loading HTTPS pages

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox is consistently crashing when the following steps are executed:

1) open firefox in a terminal:

firefox

2) open any http URL that automatically redirects to a https one (I've tested with http://launchpad.net/ and http://mail.yahoo.com/).

3) As soon as the page redirects to the https site (but before page is fully loaded), close the window.

4) Firefox will crash and the following message will appear on console:

(Gecko:5751): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GtkWidget'

(Gecko:5751): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GObject'

(Gecko:5751): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_get_data: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Environment:

- Ubuntu Edgy (latest updates)
- firefox 1.99+2.0rc3+dfsg-0ubuntu1

Update:

- in step (2) you can download the https page directly
- I've also confirmed the crash on "official" firefox-2.0rc3.tar.gz binary from Mozilla

This bug does NOT occur when running as sudo! (weird!)

$ sudo -H firefox

I attached my strace while I was running firefox as normal user.

The problem happens only when I access HTTPS pages. It crashes before any load.

Update: problem still happens with latest release (2.0+0dfsg-0ubuntu3).

Attached the (gzipped) automated crash report saved in /var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash

I am experiencing this. I cannot load mail.yahoo.ca without segfaulting.

I can, however, create a new user, log into that account and successfully browse that page.

Deleting my personal data and removing plugins and extensions does not solve the problem for my original user.

Is this still happening with firefox Version 2.0.0.1+0dfsg-0ubuntu0.6.10. can you please list EveryPlugin you have installed for firefox and what ones you disabled and tried it. If you created a new profile/user than it would be a plugin or addon that is causing it.

I can confirm this bug is still happening on the following environment, using the original test case:

- Ubuntu Edgy
- Firefox 2.0.0.1+0dfsg-0ubuntu0.6.10
- No extensions installed (clean installation)

Note that the report of the previous comment does not seem to be related to this bug. Firefox crashes when you *close* it while loading any HTTPS page. At least for me, I can still access HTTPS pages, and Firefox does not crash as long as I wait for the pages to load before closing it.

I've also attached a screenshot of the crash dialog box.

Anderson, if you can reproduce it regularly, can you please attach a crash report here? (you should be asked to submit one on crash)

(e.g. latest firefox, no extensions)

Hi,

I already tried uploading a new one but I'm getting a "Internal server error" from Launchpad (maybe because the trace is somewhat big, 4.5 MB gzipped)... I'll try again now.

I think I have already submitted all required information for this bug to become "confirmed". Is there any additional information I need to provide?

BTW, I can still reproduce it on the following environment:

- Ubuntu 6.10
- firefox 2.0.0.2+0dfsg-0ubuntu0.6.10
