Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

According to the log file:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-client-core-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12.6_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/mysql', which is also in package mysql-client 0:5.1.51-1.glibc23

Where is the 0:5.1.51-1.glibc23 package version coming from?

Changed in mysql-dfsg-5.1 (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

the 0:5.1.51-1.glibc23 package must have been from the mysql client I had previously installed, I un-installed it and was able to complete the mysql server install without any further issues. I made it as far as setting up the root password before the error, and once mysql client was gone it finished quickly.

I'm guessing the strange order I did things was what caused the error. Hope this was helpful.

I'll mark this bug as invalid given that removing the upstream package
fixes the issue.
