Bug Description

I'm getting bugmail from Bug 67410 as I registered the psycopg product in Launchpad. This product does not use Malone for its bug tracking.

Usually people register a product, so that they can link a bugwatch to the upstream bugtracker.
Isn't it a good thing that the registrant receives those emails even if the product doesn't use Malone? Btw, as an workaround you could hand that product over to the Launchpad Registry team.

I don't think that registrant should receive bug notifications if the
product doesn't use Malone. We want people to register products, and we
should try not to spam them. If they want to receive bug notifications,
they can choose to become a bug contact for the product.

Part of the problem with not notifying the upstream registrant is /who/ do we notify when a task is opened on the upstream? Nobody? Isn't that just asking for black holes?

If a task gets opened for a product that doesn't use Launchpad for bug tracking, and we don't notify anyone related to that product, it won't be a blackhole. There will still be subscribers to the bug, and you'll be able to see the bug from the Ubuntu bug listing.

Well, I feel that the proper way to fix this is to a) fix product registration to allow you to not end up owning the project you register and b) actively problem projects to the registry admins team.

I don't see strong evidence that we should special-case sending email to the product registrant.

(So how about we invalidate this bug and invest this energy in fixing product registration instead :)

Btw, I meant "b) actively retarget problem products". So we can actually make it very easy for people to give up their products by modifying the product's "change owner" widget to allow reassigning to "nobody" -- not sure what the right wording would be there, but Matthew would.
