edgy: usplash (?) blocks console after kdm shutdown

Bug #67440 reported by Marc Schiffbauer

usplash (Ubuntu)
Confirmed

Bug Description

Binary package hint: usplash

To reproduce:

Switch to console using ctrl-alt-F1
Then do a /etc/init.d/kdm stop (maybe with gdm its the same...)
Now the screen is blank and the console is hidden. No maintenance or something is possible anymore with that...

I guess its a problem with usplash?

I've got this problem, too. I'm running a Mobility Radeon X1400... what manner of card do you?

Try removing "splash" or adding "vga=0x31a" in /boot/grub/menu.lst in the line starting with "# defoptions=quiet splash", then do sudo update-grub and restart.

I can confirm this - it also make console logins impossible without doing a reboot and removing the splash options.

Moreover the ability to press alt + F1 (or F2 or F3) to dismiss the boot up graphics during boot is also not present. (As it is in every other distribution).

This is a very useful facility for trouble shooting and should be included.

This seems to be fixed in Feisty. Is it still an issue in Edgy?

This bug is most probably a duplicate of bug #63558 which is fixed. Since Jon Anderson says that it works for him, I set this bug as a duplicate of bug 63558 but if someone can still reproduce it with latest gutsy, you can set back the bug as not a duplicate.
