Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org
Binary package hint: libreoffice

1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release: 11.04

2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
  Installed: 1:3.3.1-1ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1:3.3.1-1ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.3.1-1ubuntu5 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

apt-cache policy wine
wine:
  Installed: 1.2.2-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1.2.2-0ubuntu3

 *** 1.2.2-0ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/universe i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 11.8169.8172 SP3

3) What is expected to happen is when one performs at the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/678207/+attachment/1740475/+files/test%202.doc && lowriter -nologo test\ 2.doc

the images in the attached .doc file looks the same in LibreOffice and OpenOffice as it does in Word 2007 (please see attached screenshot Word 2007 in Wine) or MSOWV via WINE.

4) What happens instead is the center image of the 5 at the bottom is slightly higher vertically above the others in LibreOffice and OpenOffice (please see attached screenshot Openoffice 3.2.1). However, in Word 2007 or MSOWV via WINE the center image is aligned vertically with the other 4. The images are centered using 'more layout options -> 'centered relative to bottom margin'.

In LO 3.3.2/Suse 11.0 I see the centre image at the bottom of page 2, the other 4 about 1/3 down page 2.
Was the doc created in MSW or LO?

[This is an automated message.]
There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.

This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:

I'm raising this from trivial status to Normal as I think .doc should be better handled in general in order to ensure that the transition between MS Office and LibreOffice is a smooth one. Preserving location of an image seems pretty important if we hope to keep users around who are forced to switch between LO and MS, for instance with me I have to use MS Office at work and choose to use LO at home, if I was dealing with images a lot, this bug would be a nightmare.

I opened the file in different programs:
LibreOffice Writer 3.5.4(Debian Wheezy), 4.1.4(Debian Wheezy-backports), 4.2.0.3
MS Word 2002(Win xp), 2007(win 7), 2010(win 2003 server)

In any case result was the same as described in comment 5: the central picture is in the bottom of page.

Can it be a bug of wine? Can anybody reproduce difference of the pictures positions between MS Word and LO Writer?

Jack Leigh, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Trusty Tahr.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please perform as much as possible of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
