I am using xubuntu 6.10 and I installed banshee with synaptic. after launching banshee, it freezes while initializing audio.
when lauching banshee in a terminal I can see the warning "cannot connect to network manager" but nothing else, also for me cpu is 0%.

i also am experiencing this problem. i have a system that i updated from dapper, running on a laptop. i have a preexisting banshee library. (in dapper, banshee worked fine)

i tried to install the gnome network manager and this does not fix the problem.

i tried to reinstall banshee, and this also does not fix the problem.

it looks like i spoke too soon, here is a potential fix (i found this while digging through the banshee mailing list, it was a fix to a different freeze, but fixed this one as well. is this a dependency issue?):

apt-get install gstreamer-tools

run the tool:
gst-launch

i got error messages when it tried to run gst-launch, but this seems to fix banshee nonetheless.

I can confirm this bug is also present in Kubuntu Edgy. Also, the installing gstreamer-tools and running gst-launch fixes the problem, but this is still a bug that should be fixed (Banshee is broken out of the box on anything but ubuntu-desktop).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? May you try to reproduce it with Gutsy? You may grab a CD Image from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ thanks in advance.

This problem was solved in feisty with an update to the version of
banshee in the repos. I have since tried the banshee on Gutsy and this
problem does not occur in Gutsy either.
