Bug Description

After upgrading from dapper to edgy I don't get any sound in totem-gstreamer anymore. Neither in mpg files nor in avi (with mp3 encoding). So it's probably not a problem of the embedded audio format.
Also I get a sound at startup which means that esd is running.
I'd assume this is a problem of gstreamer connecting to the correct output sink.

I installed alsa-oss and libesd-alsa0 and now it works. Whereas I think it's installing the latter that fixed the problem. Could anyone tell me what the difference between esd and esd-alsa is? I previously thought esd used alsa as it's output no matter what...

the alsa version is meant to be used with alsa and is installed by default on Ubuntu, marking as rejected, that's not a bug

Changed in totem:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

It might be present in edgy when you install from scratch - but I upgraded from dapper and it was NOT installed. I had to do this manually. Therefor IMHO this is a configuration problem - I'd call it a bug...

you probably installed libesd0 instead of libesd-alsa0 previously, which
you are free to do, that doesn't mean it's a distribution bug

Feisty 7.04 on gnome and Beryl. Will start up and look all officious. But there is no sound. The control bar moves along ignoring this slight hiccup. And the effects don't work until the mp3 has finished not playing. Then they decide to show up. And over the firefox window.
That is, if you switch workspaces, and come back to you, you can see the effects part of totem over the firefox window. It's like the chesire cat's smile, just the effects colouring with no containing window.
