Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-
Ubuntu 6.10. I'm having trouble using my laptop with projectors. Problem lies in resolution - Xorg only allows one video mode, 1440x900, too great for most projectors:
$ xrandr
SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
*0 1440 x 900 ( 302mm x 191mm ) *60
Current rotation - normal
Current reflection - none
Rotations possible - normal left inverted right
Reflections possible - none
I installed 915resolution (only to list video modes, I didn't modify BIOS),
and got following list:

I'm interested in 1024x768 mode. It's seems to be only available in 8, 16 and 32 bit depth, but Ubuntu defaults to 24 bits. I've modified xorg.conf:
SubSection "Display"
But this 1024x768 is still not available.
I have a similar problem with my laptop screen - it only appears to allow resolutions 1280x800 and 1024x768, though 915resolution shows far more. I think the problem is fundamentally determined by the resolution of the laptop screen (mine is a wider screen that prefers these wide screen resolutions). Nonetheless, it seems that the other resolutions should be available. Have you had any success in figuring this out?
