update fails to rename /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-23-686 to /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-27-686

Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-27-686

Upgraded to latest 2.6.15-27 kernel (tried both 386 and 686) and the ipw3945 stopped detecting my wireless card. Previous version was 2.6.15-23 in which wireless card worked "out-of-the-box".

The workaround is this:

sudo cp /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-23-686 /sbin/ipw3945d-2.6.15-27-686

Obviously this is just a module version mismatch, but not good when it breaks wireless completely.

BJ.

Make sure you have linux-restricted-modules installed.

Yes - sorry.. not quite "out-of-the-box".. I always install linux-restricted-modules.

I've since upgraded to Edgy and have no wireless issues.

Thanks.

I just noticed this bug in the Dapper release, too: If it is updated to Kernel 2.6.15-27 (which it seems to do automatically), the ipw3945 module for the centrino platform stops working, because /usr/sbin/ipw3945d-* isn't correctly renamed to ipw3945-2.6.15-27. Thus, you have to manually rename it to match the current kernel version. This should be fixed - it affects lots of users directly.

You are missing the newer linux-restricted-modules. In order to keep all packages current over upgrades, do:

sudo apt-get install linux-686
