Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have an Asus laptop with integrated 3G modem, which works perfectly fine in Windows7.
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1 64bit fully updated with kernel 2.6.37-12-generic.
network-manager version: 0.8.3+git.20101219t181118.e919218-0ubuntu1
At boot NetworkManager disables WWAN by radio killswitch unprompted and right after enabling it.
Attached there is a copy of the portion of syslog.
It is not possible to enable the hardware radio once the system has booted and therefore establishing a connection with said modem is not available, or it is available but in fact it is not possible because of no radio, no signal, no registration to network etc.
The hardware is Haewei E620 according to lsusb, and Haewei EM770 according to AT+GMM
Acpi4asus has implemented a patch for the radio issue of the aforementioned hardware and it was merged into mainline:
http://dev.iksaif.net/issues/108.
The file /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/wwan still reports status 1.

Before trying to connect the mobile session, can you please check the following two items?

 - Verify that /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state does not show "false" somewhere.
 - Verify that the output of "rfkill list" does not list items as blocked ('yes' at the end of a line)

Thanks in advance!

Hi, the file NetworkManager.state has WWAN=true, but at startup on nm-applet mobile broadband is not enabled. The WWAN modem is not listed in the rfkill list, only WIFI and Bluetooth are.

With the help of Corentin Chary at acpi4asus I've managed to start the radio at boot by adding the line:
asus_laptop.wwan_status=1

as a kernel command in GRUB. This switches the radio on at boot and leaves it on ready for connection.

Thanks

Also I used a newer asus-laptop.c and not the standard one which comes with the kernel. I downloaded the file from http://git.iksaif.net/?p=acpi4asus.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/asus-laptop for this specific hardware and followed the instructions at http://dev.iksaif.net/projects/acpi4asus/wiki/Backport_module to load it. Thanks to the guys at acpi4asus for their great work and support.

Great, that's good news. Since this proves it's an issue at the kernel driver level, reassigning to the 'linux' package.

This might need convincing the acpi4asus people to submit their latests work to the kernel, not sure of all the details there though ;)

Also, Giuseppe, please don't assign the bug to yourself unless you're a developer and plan to actively work on integrating the fixes.

Hi Giuseppe,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
