Bug Description

Binary package hint: cloud-init

When I log in to my EC2 instance, I see the message:

  A newer build of the Ubuntu lucid server image is available.
  It is named 'release' and has build serial '20101228'.

I'm a reasonably-experienced ubuntu sysadmin (with little cloud experience) and I don't know if or how I should obtain the newer build. FWIW, places I looked to try to learn include:

* https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CloudInit
* http://www.google.com/search?q=%22A+newer+build+of+the+Ubuntu+lucid+server+image+is+available.+It+is+named+'release'+and+has+build+serial%22

It would be nice if the message explained the status and my options a little more. If you don't want to lengthen an already-long MOTD, perhaps just a link to a wiki page or something that contains more details.

Thanks for taking the time to open a bug.
I think that I'm going to "fix" this issue by removing the updates check from cloud-init (bug 653220).

In 10.10 and later (and we're getting there on 10.04) images, there is really no need for this check.

Changed in cloud-init (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Triaged
