Thank you for your bug. Does it happen with any application? What focus mode do you use? What window manager do you use?

I don't know focus mode.

I am using gnome standard.

Windows Manager is standard or default ubuntu (gnome!!)

In feisty same problem.

I am open file manager and then openoffice or acrobar reader ---> focus is bad. only blinking (las program open)

I am open calculator (tool) and then open openffice -> focus is ok.

cibercol, is this with a two-monitor setup?

I have what might be the same problem; when a window happens to be mapped to the display that the currently-focused window is not on, the new window is not focused.

reply to: cibercol, is this with a two-monitor setup? NOT! .... only one monitor.

The new window is not focused! only blinking in desktop bar.

The same problem in Hardy

I was writing a bug this way:
already running applications don't get the focus when new file is opend via file-browser or terminal
for me the applications even don't start blinking
(no compiz enabled, no "two-monitor")

by the way this is might be very frustrating for user,
which doesn't notice anything, and keeps on double-clicking , thinking ubuntu ignores him ;)

by the way, the new file name appears in the aplication tab on "bottom" bar, but it's not highlighted in anyway.
if you are in the desktop other than the application, then the application tab appears in the "bottom" bar highlighted.

I have opened Nautilus, double-clicked files of two types (text and SVG) and the relevant program (gedit and eog) appeared on top with focus both times.

Please let us know whether this happens with files of every type, or whether it just happens with specific types, and whether it always happens.

yes the application is already open in my cases
it happens with .png (eye of gnome), .avi (totem), .txt (geany) ).
but OOo, evince, gedit, Inkscape works ok.

I have this problem with at least GIMP, Metacity or Mutter, and Nautilus or Nautilus Elementary.

When I first double-click an XCF file and GIMP is not running, then GIMP starts and its windows are raised and focused. If I then go to a folder and open another XCF file - with GIMP still running - the XCF file is opened in an unfocused window underneath the folder window and its task bar button pulses. Between the second click of the double-click and a few moments after the new window appears, I neither type nor click.

This happens with applications other than GIMP, but I don't recall which ones. I've not exhausted the combinations of apps, Metacity or Mutter, and Nautilus or Nautilus Elementary. I've tried both "smart" and "strict" as options for "focus_new_windows" and the behavior is the same.

As I recall, and it's been more than 5 years, the file manager should pass the timestamp of the second click in the double-click to the application with which the file will be opened. The application should either call XSetInputFocus using that timestamp or use some EWMH request with the timestamp or both to have the window raised and focused. Focus should only change if no button presses or key presses have occurred since the double-click.

Because this bug could be a failure on the part of any of the three applications involved (launcher, new window maker, window manager), I'm not sure it's actually a Metacity bug.
