New desktop icons are not aligned "to the grid"

Bug Description

When a new icon is created on the desktop it is not aligned to the grid. This is visible when moving other icons around that snap to it, which are then offset of the new icon. See screenshot.

the issue is in Nautilus itself, happens with ubuntu-10.10 too

This isn't just affecting newly created icons, I can rearrange them into complete disorder even with "keep aligned" checked. Refer to the attachment.

nautilus no longer handles the desktop icons in more recent releases of Ubuntu.

If an issue is seen in a currently supported release of Ubuntu then a new bug report should be raised against the relevant desktop icons package.
