Bug Description

I have a Logitech MX 3000 wireless keyboard/mouse bundle. I have set keyboard model to "Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro" in Keyboard preferences, and some multimedia keys are recognized in "Preference->keyboard shortcuts". It can read the XF86Back, XF86AudioMedia, XF86AudioMute, XF86AudioNext, XF86AudioPrev, XF86AudioStop, XF86AudioMail, and XF86VendorHome keys. 8 keys for a total of... more than 28 keys ! And nothing happens when I try to raise the volume through the keyboard.

I'm running Edgy Eft which is up to date when I report this bug (28 Nov 2006). Xev program doesn't detect other keys than already reported ones.

This bug is pretty the same as https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/control-center/+bug/59429/

Thank you for your bug. We seem to lack people knowing about keyboards and multimedia keys to reply to such bugs at the moment. Might be due to xorg or xkeyboard-config

I can confirm this bug. I have the same mouse/keyboard set, plugged in with PS/2.

The keys I can confirm working are:
Scroll up/down, left/right (with mouse and keyboard)
The back arrow in the lower left of the keyboard
Volume up/down, mute
Play/pause
Email
Calculator
Sleep
Music skip back/forward
The "Media" key

The stop playback key is detected but only works in one program I tested - Rhythmbox (didn't work in Totem, Exaile!) - not sure if this is a fault with Ubuntu or the other programs though.

For a solution - try getting keytouch. Most (maybe all, I didn't thoroughly test it) hotkeys worked for me, including the extra F keys.

I finally found a workaround.

One has to install keytouch AND plug BOTH mouse and keyboard in PS/2 ports.

In consequence, this bug is related to the keyboard USB port management.

Hi Psykotik,

Sorry for the extremely delayed response. Unfortunately the 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the Hardy LiveCD. If the issue still exists, please add the Hardy kernel "linux" task to the bug report. This can be done by clicking on the "Also affects distribution" link in the Actions area on left hand side of the bug report. Select "Ubuntu" as the Distribution and type in "linux" for the Source Package Name. Thanks.

Well, I'm not very optimistic, but anyway, I did as you said.

Hi Psykotik,

You tested Hardy and I assume the issue still exists? Care to provide the debugging information as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch . Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Unfortunately this bug report is being closed because we received no response to the last inquiry for information. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . If you are able to confirm this is still an issue with this most recent release please feel free to reopen this report. To reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the Status back to "New".

Thanks,
Markus
