Bug Description

Binary package hint: gaim-libnotify

Clicking on a notification when a friend logs in usually opens a conversation window. However, if you already have an open window and your friend tells you something, cliking the notification doesn't raise the window, as it should.

Hi.

What version of Ubuntu and gaim-libnotify are you using?

When you click on notification, does icon on window list panel blink?

I'm using Feisty Fawn, gaim-libnotify is version 0.12-1.

It doesn't blink.

You mean when you click on notify balloon, nothing happens? Really nothing?

It can be a gtk issue... Sebastien, what do you think?

Looks like a gaim-libnotify icon, not a GTK one

Well something does happen... if the conversation window is minimised, it gets restored. But it is never brought to the front, nor does it get focus.

I've looked at gaim-libnotify source and didn't found anything strange. Everything looks normal...

I use this plugin (in edgy, same version of you, but got it from source), and i noticed a strange behavior which window icon in taskbar blinks but the window itself don't raise.

This issue happens with a lot of programs, that's why a asked if it's a gtk bug. Maybe a metacity issue?

I see the bug is marked as "needs info". Can I provide any useful information?

Definitely i don't think it is a gaim-libnotify stuff.

The source code is right:

1) If you click on action ('Show' button), it calls present(), which calls gtk_window_present().

2) If you click on anywhere on notification, it closes itself.

I guess you belong to the first option above.

In that case, i've experienced problems like that, in a lot of applications. That's why i asked if it is a problem with gtk or metacity.

I'm afraid I can't answer that question, should I file bugs on both packages?

No, David. I asked Sebastien.

I guess there already is a bug about that, but right now i don't have time to search. But i'll do it.

marking unconfirmed, it doesn't lack a reply, just somebody not overworked wanting to work on that

It might be unrelated, but gossip also exhibits this behaviour.

When clicking on a notification, a conversation window gets open, but it does not get the focus and remains in the background flashing on the panel.

could this be caused by the fact that the gtk_window_present() is called in a window inside another window? because note that normally gaim puts every chat window inside tabs in another window...

Are there any news on the bug? It still happens, now with pidgin-libnotify 1.3. It's also independent on the window-manager and occurs under both Metacity and Compiz Fusion.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu development version, this would help us a lot. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
