[i865] natty - display heavily corrupted

Thanks for your report, could you press ALT+F2 and run the following command:

1- is not the main problem but is repeatable. display corruption artefact within button near boundary

Reflections from the room can be seen but most of the display is black with a few areas illuminated.

 a left click in the area of where the trash can is expected to be leads to a fleeting display of a window, supposedly trash, and then the lower panel 'opening' item is seen.

subsequent clicks on the panel 'opening' bar produce momentary windows and trailing corruption.

THEN I reverted the display by using ctrl alt F7 and this appeared (!)
(dark band across screen is an exposure artefact)

Before photo (8) was taken, the first keyboard action I tried was the requested
    alt F2
however, there was no response. I then proceeded to use
ctrl alt F1
and
ctrl alt F7
as mentioned in (8)

comment on (1) above: the small artefact appears and remains when the cursor is moved into the button

Thanks for the details. I'm marking as triage since there's enough information for a developer to start investigating.

I again ran the natty beta2 live CD but this time I used F6 from the initial live CD boot menu and edited the boot string to include
nomodeset

as it happens, I also chose to mark nomodeset in the F6 options, and I also removed
quiet splash
from the string also, if it makes any difference I don't know.

However, the Live CD then booted and displayed OK and ran ok in what looked like classic gnome, without display corruption.

(No sign of fancy graphics I guess, even though the machine is capable of them on previous ubuntu versions)

I did what candtalan did but with an installed version. When the nomodeset option is set in grub, there is no graphic corruption but the resolution falls back to 1024x768. The quiet and nosplash versions were set as well.

Gnome classic desktop with effects (compiz enabled) is extremely buggy with graphic corruption everywhere on the screen. I can confirm the issues mentioned by the above users. When logged in using gnome classic without desktop effects (using metacity instead of compiz), graphic corruption is far less. In this case, the nomodest option was removed. There are still minor graphic corruption around the screen. The screen flashes once in a while, especially when browsing the web.

I experience graphical distortion of this kind in Natty. (Live-CD as well as installed.):
- With Metacity, graphics of gnome-panel is corrupted in the way seen in screenshots above. In console windows, font has graphicsl distortions.
- When usind compiz, desktop is completely unusable: Windows appear and disappear right away, most of the desktop is invisible, only when dragging a window it can be seen, flickering, and disapperas as soon as movement stops. This looks like an openGL mapping failure.

Just for the record, here is a "Me too" reply here.

I get *very* serious visual corruptions here (and, yes, I do have a 865G also).

First, the Live CD tries to boot with Unity and it falls back to the "classic" mode. Unfortunately, there are still some compositing features enabled and I have to try hard to get to a terminal so that I can replace whatever window manager is running at that time with metacity with compositing disabled (just for the record, I used: "metacity --replace --no-composite").

It seems that we have some bad interaction among xserver-xorg-video-intel & libdrm & mesa.

I am attaching a screenshot to show something that I see. I assure you that this is one of the most readable screenshots that I could take.

I also get graphics corruptions under 11.04. Is it possible to backport the xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.12 from Maverick to Natty as a workaround?

I also have graphical corruption on two different Intel machines: one is using a i915GMS and one has got Intel HD Graphics.
Both ran fine with Maverick and Lucid.

I am having some problems with Natty Kubuntu, with different chip sets.

eeepc 900: sometimes the broken fonts and other anomalies occur, restarting X seems to make them go away.
Chip set: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)

asus mother board 1: always broken fonts, switching to different fonts or sizes can make the screen readable again.
Chip set: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

asus mother board2: no problems do far.
Chip set: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

All 3 systems running same Natty Kubuntu, 915GM and 82G33 in i386, 82945G in amd64.

Even am facing exactly the same issues with Intel 865GVHz described above...Don't we have any fixes yet??
Maverick and older versions runs without any issues...Only Natty has been creating problems in graphics.

Kindly provide a fix.

FWIW I am running oneiric alpha2 and it works ok in the problem machine. The alpha2 image is oversize so for a live session a dvd or a USB is needed. I installed it too, still ok, and subsequent updates are also looking good. hth

May I know your problematic machine configuration? I am not sure whether Gnome 3 would work without any issues on Intel 865GvHz (just with built-in graphics support). Because when I had tried Fedora 15, it failed to load Gnome 3 and used Gnome 2 saying graphics card does not support Gnome 3 features...

Are you able to see and use Gnome 3 launcher component on the desktop without any issues? If so kindly post a snapshot.

Sorry I only use Ubuntu at present and have not tried Fedora or Gnome3 items afaik.

When you say #63 you would like to see it, do you ask me to post screenshot of Ubuntu alpha2 on the problem machine? Or are you saying you await your own trial of alpha2?
