Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.04 beta classic desktop (hardware will not support Unity)
Don't notice exactly when corruption occurs, but the only programs open would have been Thunderbird and Firefox.
Applets in panel will appear once clicked on or refreshed, such as date and time.
Photo attached.

I can confirm this bug. I have the same graphics card, the corruptions look a bit different… I'll attach two screenshots:

01 shows a permanent symptom only affecting context menus of the Gnome panel - in my case the gnome clock applet, the indicator applet and the applet used to switch between open windows using buttons (in german called 'Fensterwähler'). I *don't* see those corruptions when I open the context menus of the menu bar and the netspeed applet.

02 shows a symptom which appears after some time (an hour or more) and tends to get worse i.e. one Gnome panel part after another is affected.

I haven't seen any of those both corruptions anywhere else than in the gnome panel - neither on the desktop itself nor in Firefox, Evolution, Banshee, Transmission, GIMP… Since I suppose (this time) only the Gnome panel is affected I'd suggest to change the title of this bug to '[RV250] Gnome panel corruptions'.

By the way: It doesn't help to chose a Gnome session without effects - so there's no way to avoid this bug.

Further update.
Exited from Thunderbird, no other application running and Desktop was completely corrupted. See attached screenshot.
Was able to restore Desktop by holding down left mouse button and 'erasing' artifact.

affects: ubuntu → xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
summary: - display is corrupted
+ [RV250] display is corrupted

I'm noticing massive swap-usage… – maybe it has something to do with this bug. I'm working for some hours now, the corruptions took over parts of the gnome panel and 2,9GB of swap are in use. I was just working with firefox, evolution, gedit, software center, synaptic, gdebi, the terminal… I'll attach one more screenshot.

There's a way to avoid the corruptions with this graphics card (at least this worked for me): Set option "RenderAccel" "off"
in section "Device" in your xorg.conf.

I have similar kind of bug 789962, not sure if it is duplicate of this bug.

I don't think that bug 789962 is a duplicate of this bug – I think it makes sense to keep those bug reports apart since different graphics cards are affected & the corruptions look different…

In the meantime I found a much better way to avoid the screen corruptions: Just use…

Option "EXAPixmaps" "off"

…in the 'Device'-section of your xorg.conf. Compared to Option "RenderAccel" "off" the performance is just amazing.

@ Glen Colquhoun: Are you still affected by this bug? If so, could you test this? I'd really like to know if this works for you too, since your screen corruptions look quite differently & I'm beginning to doubt if we're really affected by the same bug.

Solved.
I reinstalled 10.09 after filing the bug report.
Recently I installed 11.04 again and there is no evidence of video corruption.

Since my problem is still present, I'm going back to my original report (bug #766693) which was marked as duplicate of this one until now. So as far as I'm concerned this bug can be closed…
