Bug Description

typing the name of an installed program into the dash text box fails to bring up the program launcher, typing the full file name of the program results in a empty dash that is unresponsive. Uninstalling and reinstalling the applications did not help. So far the programs I have found that elicit this behavior are file-roller (Archive Manager) and gconf-editor (Configuration Editor). Neither the executable file name or the application title will produce a launcher, the launchers also cannot be found by searching through 'More Apps' -> 'Installed' -> 'see xx more results' which led me to believe that the desktop files are missing, however they are present in the /usr/share/applications/ directory. The programs can be launched from the command line or through the 'run' dialog(<alt><f2>).

This also occurs for the evince (Document Viewer) application. Evince does not appear in the list of installed applications, and cannot be found during a search, but the application is installed.

Yeah, I can reproduce this.

Try using alt+f2 in the meantime. That let me launch programs by their binary name, and not just the display name.

Thanks so much for helping make Ubuntu better!
