Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Hi,

The version of the acx driver in ubuntu is very old (from december 2005 with a few updates). There exists a much-improved version that has just been released.

I'd like to send a patch in order to update this driver in ubuntu (for feisty, mainly), but I'm not sure what the best approach is. Should this patch be agains the current ubuntu kernel (linux-source-2.6.20-3) or against the upstream kernel (basically just adding the driver to kernel/ubuntu/wireless/)?

Against current Ubuntu kernel. Also, unless some new mechanism exists, the code we have to select firmware version at module load time needs to be retained.

BTW, you didn't mention if the newer version fixed things for you.

If there's nothing broken with the current version, It's not going to be high priority to do the update.

Yes, the latest version fixes my issue.

Here it is.

I have kept the firmware loading the "ubuntu way" and deleted some very verbose warning about firmware images, as ubuntu provides those images in their correct form.

The USB is mostly same as the old one. I have not updated all as most of the updates have been to add experimental support to a new device (and it doesn't work yet).

This fixes my issue, bug #77849 (and this bug), so it is usable in feisty now.

Sorry, here is a correct one. The one I submitted before lacked a couple of newlines, which make the kernel log very messy.

As reported in Bug #78843, ACX111 wireless cards are currently detected as having "no wireless extensions" in Feisty, leaving them rather useless . According to this page:

http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Distribution_list/Ubuntu

using the latest driver version solves this problem.

This being the case, please could you have another look at the priority for this patch? I need my wireless back!

Thanks

I'll look over the patch versus upstream and merge it into my tree for Ben if it's sane.

Marking as medium since it represents a regression if wireless extensions are broken.
