Bug Description

New install of xubuntu 6.10 from alternate cd on Sony VAIO PCG-505G. All hardware detected and working great EXCEPT for no sound! The VAIO's own "boot sound" works, and I can get "system beeps" (?) when a program such as alsamixergui returns an error message. Unfortunately I have no idea what sound chip this machine uses - can't find any specs from Sony, and I've deleted the Win98 install on this machine to run xubuntu so I can't check from there. I have run Update Manager and installed all of the available updates, but to no avail.
