Bug Description

Binary package hint: eog

I consider this a bug or lack of an feature.
The problem is that Eye of GNOME 2.14.3 (i have this version but it applies on other versions also) has this feature named "Image Collection" (View->Image Colection or press F9).

This feature by default is not selected in ubuntu and i think that is normal, I don't use it.
But the problem is that even if I do not use this feature, every time I want to see an image
by double click on it in nautilus, i have to wait until this features scans all folder for images and does whaterver, and only after that i can see the opened image.
I sugest you go to nautilus, in a folder that has more than 200 photos (example: ~/.gnome2/banshee/covers or ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox/covers/ or even woese: ~/.thumbnails/normal/ ) and open one small image with eog and see the time it takes to open the image.
This is a great problem when I want to see some photos in a folder and i always do double click then close.
This delay should created from Image Collection feature should happen only when I activate it.

Pleas don't tell me to use other programs or use the Image Collection feature without the need of nautilus or use gThumb or whatever because I hope you can realize that it is ridiculous to wait like 5seconds with cpu on full load to open an 12.4kb (172x72) png image in a folder like that.

Thanks for your bug report. I just tried it with Feisty and confirmed with ~/.thumbnails/normal

Somebody of the taem should forward it upstream.

As described in the previous comments, your report lacks the information we need to investigate the problem further. We'll close this report for now - please reopen it if you can give us the missing information.

I had some time and made another test, this time in Gusty.
I repeated the test several times, so the user and sys time are almost constant, no big change between the several tryes.
Here you have in one folder only one file, a png file, and in the other folder more that 2000 thumbnails.
The real time of course it does not matter, because it has to do with how long I keep the window open.

Forgot to add the conclusion that is...
well yes it's still happening, and the difference in user time is quite big, from 0.25 when only one image file in folder to seconds to 1.75 seconds when more than 2000 files in folder.

I'm also encountering this problem; it takes eog almost two minutes to open a single image in a directory that contains 18739 images. All of the images are small: about 6KB each. I have eog's "Image Collection" feature turned off. I repeated mihai007's test:

myusername@myhostname:~/Desktop/oneimage$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 7.10 \n \l
myusername@myhostname:~/Desktop/oneimage$ ls | wc -l

Why this bug turned invalid?
This bug is still in Gusty and right now it tooked 2min to open a image in my .thumbnails/normal folder.
I don't gett it, why is it invalid?

It was closed as invalid in Jun 2007, but it seems that the upstream task wasn't closed and I've closed it now. There's a new report at bug 193010, so let's track that one, thanks in advance.
