Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

Ubuntu 6.10 with all updates
Printer: Epson C86

When I start to print any document, the printing doesn't start immediately and when it starts, it prints very slow - it takes about 5-10 minutes to print one page.
Also cups takes a lot of cpu(up to 30-40%), and system becomes unresponsible.

When I print images through gimp, the printing speed and cpu usage are ok.

I have improved the performance of upstream foomatic-rip (package foomatic-filters). Get the foomatic-rip from the OpenPrinting site

wget http://www.openprinting.org/foomatic-rip

and replace /usr/bin/foomatic-rip by the downloaded file. With this version printing, especially images should get much faster. Please test.

The cpu usage is low now, thanks, and printer started to print a little faster, but it's still too slow comparing to printing in windows or previous Ubuntu releases.

Updated to new version, but still too slow :(
CPU usage is ok.

The new version is nothing new, it is simply the upstream foomatic-rip which you tried at first, but this time in a Ubuntu package.

The remaining slowness is now caused by Gutenprint and/or GhostScript. Perhaps you are also printing with a higher resolution than used under Windows.

I have a similar problem and slow means: overnight to print the
test page, and I have it set on econonomy/draft.

Printing now takes FOREVER in Ubuntu. What's going on?

Looks like this is an old thread, so I'm likely not getting an answer. :(
