Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I tried to install Ubuntu 6.10 from the Live CD on a Macintosh Desktop Machine (733 MHz PowerPC G4). There was already a second empty partition on the Harddisk. I formatted this with gparted into "linux-swap". Then the Installer asked, if I want to install on this partition (I said yes). the partitioning Process was OK. But while installing the system the installer crashed (on 73% or so).

The program said, I have to post the error messages here.

thank you for helping.

Could you please attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman to this bug, following the directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I suspect this is due to a small /dev/hda8 partition. You'll need at least 2.5 GB to install Ubuntu, and 3GB would probably be a safer bet.

thank you for your answer. In the meanwhile I tried to install Ubuntu once more. But before I really cleaned up my partitions (with gPartEd). So I had one 10GB-Partition ready for Ubuntu. But then there comes a dialog where the Installer suggests to install Ubuntu on this partition. Very well. But the first two times (when the installer crashed) I thought I don't only want half of the partition-space left for ubuntu, so I told the program to take 100% of this partition (instead of 50% as suggested). Ok, this time I left it on 50% and: Everything worked fine.
I think that this dialog is somehow a little bit missleading (at least for me it was). What do you think?

Thanks for your report. I'm afraid that one of your partitions seems to be too small to complete an Ubuntu desktop installation successfully. Bug 48355 notes that the partitioner should have warned you about this. This is fixed in 6.06.1.
