Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The new gnome-control-center I find in the System menu is seriously awesome, it makes it much more obvious how to change settings of the computer. But I think the menu entry could be improved. As per HIG, you don't need to know the name of the program you're running (e.g. Movie Player, Archive Manager etc) - in this case the menu entry "GNOME Control Center" might confuse users more than (for example) "Settings" or "Control Center" might do.

I confirm this the name should be more user friendly like:

Control Center

And this also goes for the "GNOME Partition Manager" it should be "Partition Manager"

Also a way of easily going back to the old menu style should be nice

And a new way like a menu grouped in the sections like:

Menu->Settings->
Hardware->stuff
Internet and Network->stuff
Look and Feel->stuff
Personal->stuff
System->stuff
Other->stuff

I also think it's very important to have similar way to change System Preferences and do Administration tasks like in previous Ubuntu versions (for example because there are many documentation for users, which describes this way, also users are already get accustomed to the way how to change System Preferences/Administration in Ubuntu). Luckily this problem is already fixed by upstream developers - look at this bugreport:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402797 ([Patch] Make it easier to switch back to Preferences menus)

We need just to activate usual way to change in Ubuntu preferences, like described in comments of bugreport above.
In GNOME bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=398970 (Issues with the new control center) is mentioned one good idea about keeping the system/preferences hierarchical submenus in gnome-menu bar:

We should use control-center window in slab (gnome-main-menu applet), but leave usual way (keep the system/preferences hierarchical submenus) in top gnome-menu bar.

Is this even relevant anymore? We don't seem to make the front end to gnome-control-center accessible in Ubuntu, only the applets.

Sure it's relevant. It's possible to activate the control-center using
the menu editor, even if it doesn't show by default, and it's possible
that it will show by default in the future (I'm still hoping...). The
upstream bug is still open so it's worth keeping this open, I think.
