Bug Description

Binary package hint: gedit

since the update to edgy, gedit takes roughly 1 minute to start. I am using mainly remote files (ftp://, ssh:// at most).

when i open gedit the first time after logging into my session, i will be prompted to enter the master password for the keyring (mind you, this is for a blank document). I suspect that gedit is then trying to get information on the remote files in the "recently used files".

This is particularly annoying because I use gedit as the quick, simple editor for doing changes. However, currently I wil lstart up an IDE because it is faster even for simple jobs.

Just opening a reasonably sized file (3k) on my laptop from my desktop (ssh://wlach@192.168.0.9/home/wlach/foofile) from gedit seems to work reasonably quickly. Furthermore, I don't think gedit is trying to get information about recently used remote files when it starts up. After having opened several remote files and restarting gedit, I see nothing in an strace of gedit (or gnome-vfs-daemon) that indicates it is.

This doesn't mean that the problem you're seeing doesn't exist, just that we need more information in order to know how to reproduce it. Providing an strace of gedit (and/or gnome-vfs-daemon? not sure if it might be involved) when you see this abberant behaviour would probably be where I'd start.

(by the way, I attempted to reproduce using gedit 2.17.91, the latest in feisty).

ok, this is on edgy and not on every installation. i could locate where the problem is. If the "File Browser Pane" plugin is installed and activated, gedit will check some files fom the recently used files list (also remote files) on start up, thus delaying it badly.

enabling the plugin turns gedit into the slick and lighweight editor i would like to have.

I can confirm this behaviour on Ubuntu 8.10 amd64.

Disabling the the file browser plane plugin resolves the issue.

My assumption is that the plugin "hangs" looking for a removed file or network file.

don't reopen a closed bug because you have a similar issue, the intrepid issue is already known and has an another bug

Just trying to get involved, was not aware of the other bug but this was the same issue in the same app, gedit, so that's why I updated it.

Sorry for causing a problem.

Cheers
