No Mic

Ubuntu, Dapper Drake. The microphone doesn't work. I've read and read and read the posts about it, but none of the 'fixes' work. Many people have this problem. Is it possible to get the mic to work? Also, I already submitted a bug report for the terrible trackpad response. It's almost unuseable.

I have been running linux for 4 days, and I must say that I regret installing it. It is more difficult and less reliable than windows. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. I have lost too much time installing this and that and reading many many posts, none of which offer the solution. I understand this is a community-based creation. But Dapper Drake does not work well. Shouldn't that be the first priority?
