From discussion on IRC, this is on the reporter's system:

ben@ben-laptop:~$ madplay -o /dev/dsp times.mp3

          Title: Times Like These
       Composer: Jack Johnson
         Artist: Jack Johnson
      Orchestra: Jack Johnson
          Album: On and On
          Track: 1
           Year: 2003
      Publisher: Universal
          Genre: Rock

It would seem that OSS also "works"; but the mixer is set up incorrectly.

Again, after discussion, changing IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA doesn't help.
