Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Hi

the new applet desktop-effects has an icon from fedora's blue curve theme which looks out of place in ubuntu with default icon set and tango/tangerine. Maybe some artist can create a tango icon for it.

thanks

Is there a desktop-effects applet? I don't have it.

Which version of ubuntu are you running? And which one of desktop-effects?

Best regards
Pochu

Hi

feisty x86, up to date.

AFAIK this applet may get into main for the spec composition by default.

thanks

Hi kmon

I also have that package, but I can't see an applet in the panel. Just a program to enable/disable compiz. Is that what you are saying?

And which icon do you say? The one with the screen and the star? And the icon itself or the icon in the corner of the desktop-effects window?

Thanks
Pochu

Yes, I'm refering to that icon, sorry for the confusion but the control center programs are also called applets (capplets).

thanks

Probably better to have something that at least looks like Human than what we have now.

Here is a quickie bit of work on Human pattern.

Hi Troy!

It looks really nice! Have you done it, and if no, do you know what license it has?

Sorry, yes, I probably should have stated that.

I developed that icon based off of the Canonical SVG monitor icon present in

/usr/share/icons/Human/Scalable

My contribution to the icon is obviously completely subject to whatever license is required by Ubuntu / Canonical.

I whipped it up in about 15 minutes, but again, it is better than what we currently have (being the Fedora knockoff.)

The SVG renders properly on GNOME and under Inkscape. Firefox will corrupt the SVG render.

If there is a specific size issue, it could probably be modified quite easily.

Hope this was helpful.

erm, that last comment was quite cryptic, sorry....

I think that the icon that troy made has a great motive and expresses the visual metaphor clearly.

I like Troy's icon, but it can be confused with screensaver icon (especially the smaller versions) . I think a magic wand on a monitor may work better. See this Tangerine version:

ACK. Go for it :). Or is it possible for Troy to provide a Human version
of this ? Because Tangerine and Human icon does not blend well (whereas
Tangerine + Tango are very nice together).

Étienne.

On a serious note, I find the wand to be pretty Fedora ish. If ye request, yet gets however...

Hi,

This image is nice at large resolution. You should make a version at low
resolution (menu) and we get it :)

The icon should be named "desktop-effects" like the binary as for the naming specs. I'll do the tangerine and tango versions which could be added to tangerine-icon-theme and tango-icon-theme-common. I'd like to have the various versions of application icons to be shipped with the package, so we could kill tango-icon-theme-common, but I don't know how much work it is and if it's possible.

Sorry, but I think the Troy's icon have serious antialiasing problems, most of all around the stars it is very bad, the stars seem to be pasted upon, the monitor isnt like the others icon (for example screensaver icon or background icon) and there are others problem as the top left corner and some stars float upon the monitor...mmm I think there are a lot of work to get that icon working, dont you?
Sorry I think Troy had make a good job but I continue to prefer the Lapo's version.

I think you are entirely missing the point. Read the topic of the bug.

The idea is to have a _Human_ variant.

This means a very restricted set of design guidelines (albeit inferred as opposed to well documented) in order to fit in.

The sources are provided and they are SVG which means that the antialiasing isn't really an issue at all as it is a product of a relatively good algorithm.

There are people of two large general mindsets -- A) twiddle the heck out of something that is completely irrelevant to the average user or B) get the 'big picture' in place. In my eyes, the latter is more important than the former.

Many people spend long hours twiddling the heck out of their work and fail to realize that ultimately, the average end user (lets propose 21-36) could care less about the effort the individual has exerted as it simply isn't a factor.

Get the broad strokes down, then polish later. To that end, there is enough foundation building material within this thread to at _least_ alleviate the bug and work towards a more consistent presentation. The second 10 minute icon was an attempt to address what Etienne highlighted as a thematic issue.

Icons that are visible for less than 0.5% of your viewing day should probably be evaluated accordingly.
