Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

I have spent some time trying to reproduce your issue - however the only way I could replicate this in any way was to remove the postfix configuration directory (/etc/postfix) prior to trying to purge postfix and mail-stack-delivery.

Re-running 'sudo apt-get purge mail-stack-delivery' successfully completed the purge operation in my test case as 'postconf' was no longer installed so mail-stack-delivery won't try to backout its changes to postfix.

Please could you check whether this was the case in your installation.

I'm going to mark this bug as 'Invalid' for the time being - if this was not the case please change the Status to 'New'.
