Bug Description

have recently tried ubuntu 10.1 LiveCD. no problems running. it detected my graphics card perfectly. after needing a bios upgrade and having winxp reinstalled, I decided to install ubuntu from liveCD.

now when it gets to startx x i just get a jumble of pretty coloured stripes. I have tried the lowest VGA settings. i have tried safe boot mode (seems to make no difference). still same net result: unusable.

CPU: AMD 64 1800+ (?)
M/board: Asus A8N-E
RAM: 1GB
Graphics: Leadtek NVidia FX540 (128MB mem); PCI-E
HDD: WD 160GB SATA2

the only thing that I can put it down to is a conflict with the latest bios (necessary update, as I need to run Adobe Creative on Winxp)

Thought that it might be bios graphics device boot order (default is PCI, I changed it to PCI-E), but still to no avail.
cheers
M.

I'm sorry, what version of Ubuntu was that?

5.10 breezy and 6.06 dapper are supported, 6.10 edgy is current, and feisty 7.04 is in development.

Sorry.

That was 6.10 Edgy

SInce then I have tried Ubuntu-6.10-AMD64, which is impossible to read from after the menu options.. as I said earlier, safe graphics mode makes no difference, neither does putting it at lowest res. is there anyway of turning off the graphic install mode?

what I'm comfused about is why it worked perfectly before the bios upgrade (essential for getting winxp to run, and which is now running as well as winxp can be expected to run), but now is worse than ever.

I'm not sure why it would do that either. What BIOS versions did you update from and to? Were they official updates? Please link to where you got the updates.

Thanks.

Award Bios; Revision 1013 (latest available).
(Bios chipset is NF-CK084)
downlaoded directly from Asus site using bios update software that came with computer. sorry but can't tell you versiuon that came with board. poss it is the same version, but I think that previous update got corrupted (from virus).

is there anyway that I can compile the nvidia drivers at boot up? (i have the Nvidia driver/shell install script that always usually works). I know that I can get terminal access (rescue mode), but the header libraries etc, for compiling nvidia driver don't seem accessible at boot time. can I get around this somehow?

the other file that i have is a bios upgrade from the manufacturer, but am unsure (and very reluctant) as to how to update. Is there a set of linux commands for doing this?
