Bug Description

Binary package hint: qt3-designer

Every time I try to run Qt Designer, the splash screen appears and works correctly, but as soon as the program interface starts to show, the X Server instantly crashes and I get the kdm login screen again.
This is the first time I tried to run qt designer on this computer.

The computer has a fresh install (1 week old or so). The computer is running kubuntu and the xubuntu-desktop package. It's a pentium 3 1.00 Ghz.

Sounds like I have an identical problem. Default Feisty installation. I did a complete re-install to see if that would fix the problem - no luck. Machine is a P3/833MHz (HP C10 ePC).

Thanks for submitting this issue and helping the make Ubuntu better.

I cannot reproduce this problem on gutsy or hardy. Could you please retest this the newer releases of Ubuntu if this still occurs.

Thanks again for your help.

The computer I ran Xubuntu on is now a home-server so I can't test it in the same enviroment. However I installed xubuntu-desktop on my ubuntu-laptop and qt4 designer (mind that the topic was about qt3-designer) is running fine.

But since no-one has replied in a while I think it was just a very rare case...

Sorry to inform you, but this problem hasn't been fixed. I've just tried to start qt3-designer today for the first time, and soon after the splash screen shows, it crashes my whole kde desktop and I'm confronted with the login screen. My system is a fully updated Kubuntu Hardy on i386 and is fully updated as of today (Aug. 2, 2008) from the standard repositories. I don't have backports or unsupported repositories enabled, so if there's a newer version in there, it isn't the one on my system. The one on my system is (from looking in the apt/cache) qt3-designer_3%3a3.3.8-b-0ubuntu3_i386.deb

Every time I try to start qt3-designer, KDE is crashed back into the login screen.

Something else I noticed about this bug. After designer-qt3 crashes the xserver, if I do a CTL+ALT+F1 to get to the text mode console, I'm no longer able to use the console because the monitor appears to be out of sync like when the refresh rate isn't set correctly. But even with the console out of sync, the screen with the login prompt (ALT+F7) is still readable and in sync. In order to get the text mode console back into sync, I must reboot the computer.

Here are some messages from my syslog which I believe are thrown by this crash.
Aug 2 18:29:29 kubuntu kernel: [ 335.822159] Xorg[5874]: segfault at 000001a4 eip 0818faaa esp bfef5860 error 4
Aug 2 18:29:29 kubuntu kdm[4934]: X server terminated: [0, 0, 0]
Aug 2 18:29:29 kubuntu kdm[4934]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

Any workarounds for this bug?

I have also the same problem: qt3-designer crashing, then coming back to kdm.
It only happens when i use either katapult or kicker to launch it (pushing the button). When i type the command in console, it does work without crashing.

Actually, qt3-designer crashes also with console calling.

I'm on Kubuntu 8.04 fully upgraded (but with backports repositories) on a Dell XPS M1330 laptop.

The same bug here, with the additional information that the designer worked the last days before smoothly but from today on after edits in some ui files the bug appeared. After revert and cleaning the source changes and after reinstalling qt3-designer, the bug remains.

quoting syslog, there was no segfault as reported earlier:

qt3-designer is very likely triggering a bug in your video driver. Which video driver are you using? Also, is this still an issue in Intrepid?

Hi Jonathan,

running Intrepid since a few days, qt3-designer starts properly and
remains stable.

Qt: 4.4.3
KDE: 4.1.2 (KDE 4.1.2)
