The same thing here also. The error message is identical too. One little thing: my camera works on ekiga.

With both [feisty & gusty] camorama fails to detect webcam. Ekiga Softphone does detect and displays vidio at times.

Camorama fails to see UVC Camera (046d:09c1) as Ekiga does.

Same here. Camorama fails with 'could not connect' error. Testing on a Dell 1420 laptop with integrated webcam (apparent manufacturer is OmniVision), running ubuntu 7.10.

Results of
lsusb
camorama -D
lsusb -v
sudo lsusb -v
v4l-info
are included in attachment, as well as version info.

Cheese gets image from cam and works fine as far as I can tell. gstreamer-properties can access the webcam and displays the cam image successfully (during test).

I think I'm experiencing the same problem. I'm just adding my info here. My new webcam is a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, which is supposed to be supported by linux with OS drivers.

Works in Ekiga, but on camorama I get:
"Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0).
Please check connection."

I'm testing on hardy and intrepid

I think the problem is that camorama only supports the v4l driver and not the v4l2 driver. So, webcams that only support the v4l2 driver don't work with camorama. I emailed the guy, and never got a response. I suspect that camorama development has ceased to a certain degree, and this bug will never be fixed.

If the software is not maintained, removed it from the repositories.
Cheese supersedes most of camorama's features, and is actively maintained.

Camorama is broken, and won't be fixed; kill it and avoid user frustration.

I can confirm the same bug with:

Dell XPS m1300
Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid)
2.24.0 (Ubuntu 2008-10-07)
2.6.27-7-generic (#1 SMP Fri Oct 10 03:55:24 UTC 2008)

Camorama version: 0.19-2

When camorama is started it opens with message:
"Could no connect to video device (/dev/video0). Please check connection"

Skype and vlc using the same device are working properly

On Acer TM5730 ekiga & vlc work fine, camorama "Could no connect to video device (/dev/video0). Please check connection".
The plug-in v4l don't work in ekiga (https://bugs.launchpad.net/~danielhollocher has see it)

As the original reporter of this bug:
Please remove the the Camorama package from the repositories.

Camorama is no longer maintained (no release in two years).
Functionally, this application has been deprecated in favor of Cheese.

I will not be able to further test the bug, since I no longer run Linux natively. (I got Jaunty in a VM with windows 7 host).

Do not remove but please provide a patch to start it with v4l1-compatibility. See this workaround (german)

Well, I'll post an english translation:

install libv4l-0 (which should be in the depencies of camorama)

start camorama with

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so camorama

or
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l1compat.so camorama
(for 64bit)

greetings
