That crash looks like a memory corruption problem, could you try to get a valgrind (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind) log for it?

I am having troubled reproducing the effects. I tried removing the package, then reinstalling it, and it didn't crash.

How do I stop gnome-panel from restarting when I killall it, so that I can start it with Valgrind?
