Bug Description

On a Samsung laptop with Nvidia Optimus Unity stopped working after updating the system. Both cards (nvidia and Intel) are capable of using Compiz and were working (both - using Bumblebee) before.
The solution (uninstalling Nvidia drivers - just checking it) - will remove the ability to use nvidia card properly. :(

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Can you post the result of this command:

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

Many thanks.

Sorry, I forgot about it.
Before uninstalling nvidia-current: something about GLX missing
After uninstalling nvidia-current:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2

Not software rendered: yes
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity supported: yes

Also after the update and BEFORE reboot OpenGL stopped working in Java (I'm developing OpenGL game in Java right now). After reboot Unity wasn't working too.

Maybe the solution would be putting older version of nvidia drivers until the bug is resolved (if others have the same problem with them)? The update I installed almost certainly had new version of nvidia-current and probably of Java (I've seen iced tea in there). It was the first update I did in a month though, so I don't know how long the problem was there.

I found what unity_support_test displayed before:

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: unable to create the OpenGL context

I found it in this bug that seems similar but is closed: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/756583 - the reporter also had a laptop with Optimus technology (the laptop has both Nvidia and Intel cards).

Is everyone in this bug using Ubuntu-11.04? It is always helpful to
mention the your version of Ubuntu

Yes, I have this problem in 11.04. If I have nvidia-current installed Unity (and OpenGL as a whole) doesn't work.

11.04 and it appears that 3D acceleration was lost as a whole with the update. I'm still able to watch full screen videos though.

@Ordarney - if you have dual cards (Intel Sand Bridge + Nvidia) then you can try uninstalling nvidia-current - it helped me (to some extent - OpenGL and Unity works now but is less stable), but I of course lost the ability to switch to nvidia with Bumblebee.

I guess I should mention how I fixed my problem. I went to the grub, then to the previous kernel and rebuild packages. That solved my problem. A week later I updated, no issues this time.

The bug is still present. I can't use nvidia card still. How would it be fixed when there was not fix released? :|

Magnes, Does unity work for you now in Ubuntu 11.10? you stated the problem appeared after an update, could you try to boot from live cd of Ubuntu and check if Unity is working there, or maybe test in a guest session of your current install.
