In feisty.
The /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0 created by network-admin does not include the line 'noauth' required for ppp to work with most ISPs.

This makes pppd produce the following error:
/usr/sbin/pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself
/usr/sbin/pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so.
/usr/sbin/pppd: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.)

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167342 mentions that the noauth problem should be fixed

I've just installed Ubuntu 6.10 and have hit this problem having used System -> Administration -> Networking to configure the modem. /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0 doesn't contain noauth, unlike a much older version of Ubuntu I used to use, probably 5.04. Consequently, pppd complains during `ifup ppp0' as described above. The vanilla 6.10 install has left me with gnome-system-tools 2.15.5-0ubuntu2.

Regarding the importance of fixing this bug: As it stands, a new user who has installed from a 6.10 CD can't get online using their modem and diagnosing the problem isn't straightforward for 90% of those users. It may be that they can use some other system or OS to get online and seek advice, but if not they're scuppered. If updates to the 6.10 CD ISO are ever released, it would be nice to get this fixed in time for the next one.

I've also encountered this bug. Ralph Corderoy is right that this problem is a major one. For the next update to 6.10 CD ISO, may I suggest that the "auth" line in the options file be commented out while the network-admin interface is not yet fixed (possibly by putting an option there)?
