All Gnome-Gtk apps crash - segmentation fault

using ubuntu dapper 6.06

All Gnome applications crash with a segmentation fault when they receive keyboard input.
They crash with "segementation fault"

gdmlogin crashes when typing any alphanumeric key (other keys do not make it crash), so I cannot even log in. I can get into my desktop by killig gdm and using the startx command. However, all gnome apps (gedit, nautilus, etc) crash when they receive keyboard input also.
