Step by Step what I did and the results.
I used the Eclipse internal tool
Menu Help - Software Updates - Find and Install - Search for updates of
current .... - Finish and teh downloading starts again. Then I get No
updates are to find. But PDT requires upgrade, therefore :
Then I use
Menu Help - Software Updates - Find and Install - Search for new
features to install - Next - and mark "The Eclipse Project Updates"
without to mark PDT (as PDT requires a Eclipse upgrade) - Finish -
Then next window confirm upgrade and - Next - and a long list of
possible upgrades appears (some with a red cross!!!) then - FINISH a-
and again a lot downloads. My ISP like my bill I have to pay. Why
Eclipse downloaded updates are not cached as Ubuntu? Would save a lot
off traffic. OK never mind and now - Install All -

If I use the terminal and use "sudo aptitude reinstall eclipse" or
"sudo apt-get build-dep eclipse" or "sudo dpkg-reconfigure eclipse" I
get no result always all is OK, but PDT is not to install.
I added PDT to the Eclipse repository as required.
OK thats it. What next? You need other log file? As I need PDT I will
provide you with all I can get from my box.

Hi Aron,
To test a bit more after I upgraded today again Feisty I started to
reinstall Calisto and Webtools via termninal without sudo. And I got the
below, hope it helps you now to allocate what is wrong with Eclipse
under Feisty. What can I do more?? A lot of re-downloads are happening,
without any prior error pop up from upgrade manager telling me that the
voted updates or installing are depending on something, but when I the
download and install, Eclipse simple freeze for a long time when
installing and I get below info. I have no clue what to do more real
now. Need your advise.

Then I restarted and installed via sudo only Eclipse! Started in terminal.
And got , but see see below, hope you find now time to advsie me what to
do. Or shall I forget Eclipse for the time being??? Would be pity as

Thanks a lot Aron.

Yes I run Sun 5.0, but I found now that that there are other Javas also
installed - as it seems automatically. Will try to clean that up to have
only that SUN 5.0 installed. Hope that helps and not breaks other
applications. Using a Alpha version is amazing but interesting. Only
pity that Eclipse does not have such sophisticated application (applet)
install system like Ubuntu. Hope that one day its works like per example
the Apache installments. There I don't need to go to Apache to add
functionality, all is in Synaptic and thats all I need. Never mind, will
check up my Java and then report about results.

OK I use now Sun 5 Java and I get when I click to update:
Requested operation cannot be performed because it would invalidate the
current configuration. See details for more information.
Platform configuration has been modified outside this program. A restart
is recommended.
But it is a clean and fresh sudo eclipse install without anything else
done in Eclipse respect. I even removed all Eclipse folders (Krusader
root) and also the deb packages before I did install via sudo apt-get
again....
Will now try Sun 1.4 and report on that. The blackdown 1.4 cause teh
same result.
If you need some logs etc pls advise.

OK now 5 removed 1.4 installed via synaptic. aptitude reinstall eclipse
Computer restart. and the same....

I got the same problems as Áron Sisak. However, I was able to fix the "Unable to create file..." problem by changing permission on the /usr/lib/eclipse/features and /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins directories:

sudo chmod ug+w /usr/lib/eclipse/features
sudo chmod ug+w /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins

(changed the permission back to what it was once update ran to completion)

Once this was done, the update was able to run to completion.

However my problems began pretty much after that. Firstly, the images on the "Welcome" page don't seem to be loading properly, I've attached a screen shot. I can live with that one, provided Eclipse works. Secondly, I can't open the "Find and Install" dialog once I've started up Eclipse. I get the following error in a dialog box:

"Requested operation cannot be performed because it would invalidate the current configuration. See details for more information."

And under "Details" this is what it says:

"Platform configuration has been modified outside this program. A restart is recommended."

After closing this dialog box and trying again I get the following notification:

"Another install/update job is in progress. Please cancel it and re-launch this action."

I also noticed that now I can't see the CDT option under the "Perspectives" anymore. Not sure where to go from here.

I have the same problem. Here is what I did
1) Install Eclipse 3.2 standoline (not using apt-get)
2) Manually install all plugins (download and extract)
3) you MUST change the default JVM to the Sun JVM - I spent 4 hours on this, but Eclipse PDT does NOT work with the default Ubuntu JVM, you must switch to the Sun JVM.

sudo update-alternatives --config java

and select the sun jvm

Hope this helps
