Bug Description

Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet

I use as gtk theme "Murrine PF-Y"

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=49910

which puts background images on the gnome panel. All applets work fine with this panel, except fast-user-switch-applet, it uses a solid background. Take a look at this picture

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - the Gutsy Gibbon. If you want to try it you can get a CD Image from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ ; thanks in advance.

I can confirm this bug for hardy. Using this theme

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Melancholy+Murrine?content=70659

and a up to date hardy, the fast-user-switch-applet still has the wrong background.

The reason that this happens is that the FUSA applet is a menu while the other applets are using buttons. While I do believe that you are correct in saying that it is wrong, it would require a major overhaul of the applet to be able to do that. Either that or have themes render their menus differently.

Considering that the applet is deprecated upstream, I seriously doubt that this will ever get fixed. A distro patch would have to be huge (roughly like rewriting it) I'm marking it as "Won't Fix".

Despite the ''Wont fix" mark that mr.Gould set for this bug, i have found a temporary solution.

to change the background color of the applet following is necessary:

gedit /home/username/.gtkrc-2.0

and add/change as following:

style "fastuserswitchapplet"
{
  bg[NORMAL] = "#262626"
  fg[NORMAL] = "#FFFFFF"
}
class "*fast-user-switch-applet*" style "fastuserswitchapplet"
widget "*fast-user-switch-applet*" style "fastuserswitchapplet"

where bg is background color, fg foreground color,
after that kill the applet

killall fast-user-switch-applet

it should automatically restart, if not run it

that should do the trick.

Hope someone will save some time with this!

I do not know why this bug has been closed since it is still there.

Here is the error I have been seeing:
"the panel encountered a problem while loading oaf11d:gnome_ fast user switching applet

This is a fresh load and as you already know the backround is not the default as it should be. I have to say I have loaded Ubuntu server on 4 machines and 50 percent of the time is was without error and 50 percent of the time it was. Go figure!

Is this ever going to be fixed because it obviously has been over looked and it is quite trouble some.

is there an easy bandaid?

Upon a reinstall of gnome applets and ubuntu desktop there are lots of failures to fetch from us.ubuntu and I can only wonder if this plays a part in the error.

This bug is happening in MANY applets:
-volume
-clock
-system tray
-switch-user
-maybe others (those are the one I use that are affected).

I am running Jaunty (Beta), and this is kind of a big issue. Applets should ALWAYS adopt the panel's background.
