Bug Description

When I try to log in into Gnome. After the log in screen disappeared, the only thing I got was a light brown screen for a while then a grey box in the top left corner of the screen. And then, nothing else, it just froze there forever. I had to kill it with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.

After looking on the web, I found a potential solution on a forum which was to delete .gconf* and .gnome* . Didn't work. The XOrg.0.log was not very informative either as all the errors I got were not fatal. The .xsession-errors was even less informative; the messages it contained were not errors at all.
I have also tried to duplicate the commands in /usr/share/gnome/default.session but it doesn't work, infact if I create a new user and i try to log-in with gnome i have the same problem.

If I try to log-in with XFCE it loads the desktop icons but it can't load panel.

I can only log in with KDE, but i don't like it very much...
But I can't load many gnome application with it.

If i tried to set
dpkg-reconfigure debconf
to use Gnome frontend it says that it can't initialize it and so load Dialog frontend.
I don't know if this is correlated with the first problem.

I'm having the exact same problem, even after doing a full dist-upgrade c. 30 minutes ago. Bootsplash looks normal, I get the login "bongo" audio prompt - but after entering username/password, no more audio, no gnome splash - then after c. 30 seconds, a white/grey rectangle appears in the upper left corner.

This is in a clean Feisty Beta install with all recommended updates, no desktop effects. I am running the nVidia driver from the official repositories (in fact, I have nothing installed that's not from the official repositories).

The odd thing is everything was working fine as of early yesterday (Wednesday 03/28/07) morning. I powered down to go to work, got home yesterday evening, powered up and this happened.

Please let me know what other information might be helpful (that I can get from the console, as reovery mode is the only functional way I have of booting Feisty right now!).

Thanks!

Got home from work, powered up into recovery mode and ran "aptitude-update && aptitude dist-upgrade", allowed all upgrades. Rebooted to GDM, logged in - and everything's back. If someone can tell me where the aptitude upgrade log file is (if any), I'd be glad to post the contents, hopefully including whatever fixed the problem.

The problem's back. After the updates of a couple of days ago, the same behavior occurs - normal-seeming login but no gnome splash, no audio and after c. 30 seconds, a grey/white rectangular artifact in the upper left corner of the screen. I've been updating regularly since this returned with no success.

I'm going to do a clean Beta install this weekend and see if I can reproduce & document the steps that lead to this situation.

After a clean Beta install, I'm not seeing this problem - however, I am seeing a new one (see bug #104128).

Stop the presses! After another reboot, I',m seeing the same behavior again - no gnome splash, no audio and after c. 30 seconds, a grey/white rectangular artifact in the upper left corner of the screen. This is not occurring on my Sony VAIO laptop, model PCG-GRZ610....

I just tried switching back to the "nv" display driver (using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" after booting into recover mode). The only entries I made were for the amount of video memory (131072) and the maximum/preferred resolution (1440x900). When I rebooted into GDM, I got approximately the right 2/3 of the display (the left 1/3 was black) and the same behavior - login looks normal but I get a blank screen, no gnome splash and, after c. 30 seconds, a grey/white rectangular artifact in the upper left corner of the display area.

This also affects bug 104128 and I will post this information there.

I did one more clean install on Saturday (4/14/07) and the problems cited above seem to have been corrected. I did nothing different - I can only assume that some component update in the interim fixed the problems I was having. As of now, it's looking pretty good.
