Bug Description

The Intel Network Card 82562V (Intel Corporation 82562V 10/100 Network Connection) is not recognized on Dell Dimension E520 by Ubuntu 6.06.

This card uses the Intel e1000 driver that did not seem to be loaded by kernel 2.6.15-26 shipped in xubuntu 6.06.

Thought it can't configure the network, Xubuntu installation goes on until the end !

After loading explicitly the e1000 driver, the network still can't go up:

root@xubuntu-desktop:~# /etc/init.d/networking start

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

Some folks say on the net that problem is solved with 6.10 version but that CD ROM may not be recognized by this version.

This problem has already been mentionned in Ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=276126) but apparently stays unsolved.

Is there a way to get an updated driver from Intel ?

I've found one but I'm not sure it's the right (http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-009209.htm) and moreover Xubuntu does not seem to install gcc properly.

Thank you for you help.

Thanks for your bug report. Could you please include the output of 'lspci -vvn'? Additionally you mention that you have a 82462V 10/100 network connection but that you loaded the e1000 module. If the network adapter is a 10/100 you will want the e100 module. In the event that you tried the e100 module and it failed please include the output of 'dmesg' after loading the kernel module.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem with my E520 and I’m running 6.10

According to Intel, the e1000 should be used for the 82562v, apparently this isn’t working either, here’s a quote from the E100 README file:

“NOTE: If you have the Intel® 82562v 10/100 Network Connection, you must
install the e1000 driver.”

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530. On Hardy, the 82562V-2 card is detected and configured automatically, and works perfectly fine.

In the intrepid beta it is not. Checking ifconfig reveals that in Hardy it is recognized as eth0, but Intrepid shows it as pan0, and starts it Down. Using ifconfig to enable it doesn't help. I would think that it would use the e100 driver, but if it uses the e1000 driver, that would be the cause (since it is disabled in the beta).

lspci line:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection (rev 02)

Can someone at least tell me if this is due to the e1000 driver problem?

The e1000e driver bug should be resolved in Intrepid now. Care to retest with Intrepid's final release that's set to come out in the next few days. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

It works fine now. It must have been the e1000e bug.
